In Five to Ten Years

The big news of the day is that the Diabetes Research Institute announced that they’ve created an “organ” to mimic the function of a pancreas; making it the “next quantum leap toward a biological cure.” <Throws confetti and glitter>

You can read about the sunshine and unicorns here.

Look kids, I don’t mean to be a cynic, but that’s kinda what I am. I’ve been a T1D for 30+ years and there is always some “revolutionary treatment” that is “X years closer to being a cure” and all “we need is your support (read: $$$$$$) to make this a reality.”

I understand why some people might be excited about this. It’s a step in the right direction that may or may not involve being on a different set of drugs for the rest of your life. And when I was younger, I dreamed of the days I wouldn’t have to hide in my parents’ closet to avoid getting my dinner insulin shots. (I don’t do that anymore, but the pump isn’t quite what I had in mind.)

But I’ve kind of just grown to accept that this “flaw” is just a part of who I am and I can’t really imagine my life without it. So it doesn’t make sense to get all worked up and excited about it. Because I’ve heard it all before. My parents heard it a ton. Lantus, for the love of pete, was supposed to be the answer to all my problems. (It didn’t.)

If people want to jump on clinical trials, fine. Get excited about it. I’m just gonna sit here with my tubing and CGM until someone knocks on my door and tells me that my insurance will cover this new, revolutionary, treatment. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.
